Headlight flasher question 900

I can pull the turn signal stalk toward me on my '95 945 to cause the headlights to flash bright. But if I hold it on flash for a few seconds, I notice a smell that I assume is wire insulation burning. It's only happened a couple of times, as I don't want to experiment and discover I have to repair a wiring harness inside the steering column.

Does anyone have any knowledge or experience with this problem? And is there anything I should do, other than avoid using the headlight flasher?
