My friend just picked up a 91 940 Turbo with 230K. Previous owner said that tranny fluid was last changed at 110K. After that fluid was never changed at all!!
The fluid is a dark maroon color but there is no burnt smell. Tranny shifts very well and there is no slip. Also no tranny leak at all.
Given 1) the high miles 2) last tranny fluid changed was 120K ago should my friend flush his tranny (using the cooler line method advocated here) and put in fresh Mobil 1 ATF??
I hear all this talk about: 1) the clutch packs needed the metallic grit in the current old ATF to prevent slip. Once you remove the metallic grit, the clutch packs will start to slip. 2) new fluid will desolve all the varnish and clog up the tranny. Any truth to this??
I personally have a 91 945T with 140K and I did an ATF flush recently and replaced with Mobil 1 ATF. So far, I have been very happy with the result. car shifts smoother and where it used to shift hard when it hot, that has all but disappeared.
However the mileage is giving me some doubts. any suggestions
