745 T running problems and then some... 700 1987

My 745t has had an INTERMITTENT running problem for some time now and is frustrating the hell out of me. The car will run fine for a while and then out of nowhere will begin sputtering, stalling , smelling like it is running too rich and tonite refused to restart after a brief shutdown. I have a spare amm which made no difference and a spare brain which also made no difference. The ECT sensor is <6 months old and I replaced the plugs, wires, cap rotor also within the last few months. Relays have been resoldered or switched out or both. I replaced the distributor because of a bad hall sensor connector within the last year also. Just this past weekend I finished installation of a new (used from Dave Barton) wiring harness(the old one was crumbling at the injectors and some sensors) and replaced all vacuum lines. Hell, I even have cruise working for the first time since I've had the car. Tonite when I could not get it to restart(finally did) I noticed the tach was moving while I was cranking it. Part of me is thinking fuel pump( which are original as far as I know) but if it fuel pump related why the smelly exhaust on occasion? I did manage to get the car home and when I pulled in the driveway and let it idle it ran smooth as silk with the tach barely moving. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Dan

p.s. fuel pressure regulator is also new within the last few months

p.s.s. fuel filter has also been replaced recently
