PNP Switch Problems? Transmission Acts Up 900 1992

When driving on the highway the Orange arrow on the dash starts to flash and the E,S,W lights down near the transmission selector are flashing back and forth. The transmission then starts to hunt for a gear and the speedo goes crazy. The transmission feels at time like it goes into neutral. When the car runs around town the transmission does great as well as the speedo. And at times when I'm on the highway for short periods the transmission does great. I did the PNP test where you put the trans in park and turn the key to #2 Step on the brake and attempt to shirt out of park. My car passed this test. The PNP test was performed in the morning after the car sat all night. All help appreciated. Thanks!
