What is cause of kickdown cable binding? Any remedies that have worked? 200 1989

'89 240..kickdown cable is sluggish to retract back into the cable sheath. Other that dropping the pan and replacing the cable...are there any remedies that have actually worked for you?

What is the reason that the cable begins this sort of sluggish failure? Is it lack of lubrication? Is it a symptom of a transmission problem?
