Hello,
I have a 1986 745 with a manual transmission. It runs great but the body is starting to rust from years of salt in the winter time. I would love to find another such car.
I have heard that after about 1990, the manual transmission RWD cars are very rare. I would love to find a 1995 945 turbo with a manual transmission, if there ever was such a beast. Could I get one overseas? What are my options?
I have thought of taking my transmission out of my 1986 745 and putting it in a 945 turbo. But, I have a couple of hestiations: 1) 225K miles on the transmission, 2) different (lower) final drive gear ratio due to a different rear differential - that would reduce fuel economy, 3) finding a shop to do it right- managable, 4) cost, although not as important if reasonable.
What do you think? Do I need to let my dream die? The 1986 745 has been in my family since new - I love the ability to work on it myself, its versatility, and the way it drives.
Thanks,
Steve Long
