Heater control valve: Set to cold, how much incoming coolant does it block? 200 1980

Simple question about the original style heater control valve.

Basically I'm having to bypass the heating unit (as I have to drive the car tomorrow, and have yet to put the HVAC unit back in the car.) I'm going to block off the hoses on the inside of the car that would usually attach to the heater core, but I'd like to not have to drain the coolant when the time does come later this week to put the thing back together.

I'm just wondering if I keep the valve set to full cold if it will keep all coolant from entering the car, or if I'm still going to have to drain the coolant system.

Thanks as always.
