Odometer gear OK - Now what do I check? 200 1988

Thought I had the usual small gear problem with my 1988 245GL odometer. All other gauges work fine. Went to the PNP and got TWO instrument clusters [from a GL and DL] one of which had a newer style white 25 tooth gear, the other, had the original gear with a bad tooth or two... Ahh!! Followed
Eric's excellent instructions from the site referenced in this forum to move the good gear to the cluster for the GL. Installed it - drove - it worked and registered 3/10 mile on the trip odometer then quit!! Since I had my original cluster out, I opened it up and saw it had a white replacement style gear and all it's teeth. A couple of times in the past when I removed/replaced my cluster the odometer worked intermittently then quit. Two clusters tell me it must be something else. I am fairly certain the connections on the back are sound. I even spliced in a different 3-wire white 90 degree connector to the speedo circuit board. I was careful to align the triple pins and the single pin onto the circuit board when I reassembled. Is there a sending unit somewhere under the car that can go bad? What else can it be? This is driving me crazy.
