One Fuel Pump or Two??? 700

'87 740 GLE Wagon Non-turbo

I'm really confused now. I was under the assumption that I had a pre-fuel pump in the tank and the main fuel pump outside of the tank. After looking under the car I don't see a fuel pump outside the tank. How do you determine a one pump/two pump system? Thanks! TPW
