New volvo has some quirks 700

Just picked up this car.
89 745turbo w/170k automatic. Here is the deal. When I first start the car in the morning it fires right up but afterwards it will not start unless I put my foot to the floor and then crank it over and then it takes probably about 3 seconds of cranking before it finally catches. Once started it runs really nice. What am I looking for here? The problem doesn't vary depending upon fuel level in the tank and it starts fine in the morning so I've eliminated the fuel line check valve and the intank pump. Is this a classis hot soak issue?

Also, I picked the car for a good price as the PO thought the engine had a bad main bearing. While the car does have more piston slap than my 88 sedan does it makes a significant tap tap tap sound from the top end somewhere that if definitely too loud to be normal and persists even after the engine is warmed up although its a little quieter. I've had several volvos and its not normal. I was thinking maybe the valves need adjusted badly or that a rocker is loose but have not yet had time to look at it. I understand that any explaination would be a bit of a stretch with this description but I wanted to know if anyone else has had similar issues or noises. Thanks,

J. Studer
