ECU Belly-up 92 960 900

The patient: 92 960 wagon, 180,000. The FAQ says their effective life is 14 to 15 years so it crapped out right on schedule. The car flunked its emmission control test for licensing, runs incredibly rich and has a rough idle. My local mechanic suspects the ECU but we decided to forego the next $200 in diagnostics to determine if that was exactly it or not. The question - has anybody had any experience good or bad with remanufactured ECU's? How much are they? I did try and look at the FAQ companies but they weren't much help for the 960. Viper injectors does have a "send it in to us for $50" program tho. Anybody tried that? Being on the short side of mechanical competence, is this simply a "plug and play" type of replacement or do I need to do some kind of programming as well. I suspect I am merely trying to get the car back running competently so that I can put it in the paper or EBay or run the $ to see if it just makes sense to donate it to a worthy cause. And I just put new Nivo's and struts on it.
