I have a 1981 245DL wagon with 250,000 miles. Picked up for free. I have spent a lot of time and a little bit of money trying to fix all of the issues so that my fiancee will have a safe, reliable daily driver.
Lately I have come to find out that it definitely has the common wiring harness issues, needs brakes and exhaust to pass inspection, and may have terminal floorboard rot.
Meanwhile I have a friend with a 1991 245SE, 160,000 miles. It has no wiring issues, obviously, and a lot better body. Only caveat is that it has unspecified "tranny issues". I can get it cheap.
My question is, is the auto tranny in the '81 a direct swap for the '91? The '81 has an automatic with no overdrive. Not sure about the newer car.
Thanks,
Greg
