Fuel gauge reading wrong?! 700 1987

My 87 745's fuel gauge is starting to act a little weird.... I was on a business trip the other day and the less fuel I had in the tank the higher the gauge would read. I filled the car up with fuel and tapped on the tank and the gauge seems to be working fine now. I read in the FAQ how to test the sender with a 68 OHM resistor, but I am a little confused as where to place the resistor in the circut to test the sender... Thanks in advance!
