New 544 dude 444-544

Hello from the new guy, Jeff. I am the proud owner of two PV 544's, a "C" and a "E" model. I live in Elk Grove California, which is in the greater Sacramento area.

The "E" model was given to me by my dad about two years ago and is a reinCARnation of his first car, a Green 1959 Sport model. When the '59 needed rebuilding in the late 70's, my dad elected to part with the "Green Dragon" and bought the '64. The new car was by no means a "cream puff", but it had a newly rebuilt engine, 12v starting system and the more robust B18. My dad and I swapped the seats, wheels and rear trunk lid from the '59, painted it green and called it the "new" Volvo. Between the two "Green" Volvos, it was the only car my dad drove unlil I was 20 years old. Maybe it's needless to say, but there are many family memories in that old car. As the father of two myself, the tradition of getting in the Volvo to go get ice cream at Baskin-Robbins continues. Mmmm...Rocky Road.

The "C" model was a rescue mission from last year. I saw this beat up 444 from the highway parked backwards and the wheels in my head started spinning. After two weeks I couldn't stand it anymore, I had to know what was up with it. I get in the Green Volvo and drive over there to find out. Uh oh, it's gone. Now I REALLY need to know what happened to it! Remember when you were a kid and there was that one house that creeped you out, this was that house. I part the brush overgrowth and knock on the door. Immediately, there is an eruption of dogs barking, big dogs! Holy Crap...what am I doing here! Well, I still have to know if that 444 went to the "junk yard" or not. The door finally opens and because of the combination of light and shade I can barely see who's inside. I can see a figure in a wheelchair and hear a voice, but I can't easily make out either. After repeating myself over the barking dogs a couple of times, the lady in the wheelchair tells me the "Tow Guy" took both the Volvos that her son owned. Both Volvos! This is not good, I thought to myself. I convinced her to give my number to her son. The next day the "Tow Guy" calls me "regarding the Volvo". He tells me the 444 is "gone", but the '62 544 is for sale. Now, I already have a 544, but when he said the 444 was "gone" he meant he crushed it for $80 scrap metal. The "junk yard" is one thing, but scrapping is another. In my dejected state I decided to "look" at the 544. The next day I saw it and it looked like a car that had sat under a tree for 20 years, because it had. Amazingly though, after 20 years the "Tow Guy" was able to start it and drive it in his yard. With the idea that he might crush this Volvo too, I decided to buy the 544 as a project.

So here I am, married with two kids and two 544's. What I need now is to hit the Lottery to build two garages.

Cheers from Jeff in Elk Grove, Ca.
