Saturday afternoon story 200

I had the 242 out for a spin this PM and on my way back I noticed the ugly smell of hot antifreeze. Car was running okay and the temp gauge was at normal. I had the heat on a little and it was still working so I figured the coolant level was up. I drove the last five miles somewhat conservatively. By the time I got home the antifreeze smell seemed to have subsided until I stepped out of the car where it was stronger than ever. I opened the hood. Condensation was rising off of the engine and there was a noise like a pressure cooker just getting up to temperature. "Head gasket," I said to myself. I let it cool off a bit. After the fog lifted I looked around and my suspicion was confirmed. The leak seems to be near the #3 intake.
Well, it just so happens I have an Elring top end gasket set on hand. And I have a rebuilt head from a '79 B21 that has never been used. So I may put it into service.
I'll know more when I get the existing head off. I expect it's only losing coolant to the atmosphere. I haven't looked at the oil yet.
I think I'll go out to the garage and start soaking the exhaust manifold nuts.
