1986 Volvo Diesel...bad Idea??? 700 1986

I was offered an '86 Volvo (740???) TD sedan for pretty cheap(automatic). I've heard that these have a volkwagen diesel, and that some parts are interchangable with the gasser VW 4 and 5poppers. Are these cars a nightmare? From what I saw the car is immaculate...haven't heard it run yet. What do I do???
