o2 socket won't clear the sensor 200

I bought an o2 sensor socket and on the back of the o2 sensor (where the wires come out) there is a seam that the socket won't clear. Can I pop off the back of the sensor to get the socket on or will it damage the sensor?

Theres nothing wrong with the sensor but I need to repait the manifold under it.
