Budget headgasket work 200 1986

Hello fellow BBers,

The headgasket recently went south in my `86 245 b230f. The car has about 230k. I believe the gasket is shot due to age/wear and I wasn`t having any overheating problems prior to its demise. I plan on replacing it soon and I wanted to know if anyone has had success with replacing the HG without having to recondition the cylinder head.
Also, do I have to replace the head bolts and what is the best method of keeping the timing belt properly positioned w/o having to remove the bottom assembly?
Thanks to all replies.
