Installing Fuel Sending Unit 700 1989

Awhile ago I installed a used sending unit, and it worked fine. Very slow to get to the full mark, but after the car drove over some bumps it made it to full. Now the fuel gauge will not budge past the low fuel warning red area.

Is there a set of alignment procedures I missed when installing this device?
