Some of you may recall my recent post in the 120 Forum asking if a steering wheel that fits a 140 would fit in a 122. The wheel in question was intended for my PV, but, as it turned out, the adapter it came with was for a 140. Returning it made no sense because it came from Europe, besides, I had already made a number of "improvements" before I discovered that it wouldn't fit. Since I got no nibbles on my offer to sell, I decided to go for broke and try to make it fit the PV.
I scavenged the most deteriorated PV544 steering wheel I could find in a Volvo junkyard, cut out the hub, knocked off the composite material around it so I had only the aluminum core left. This I ground down till it fitted inside the 140 adapter housing. I then sliced off the spline-end of the adapter, which was about 1/2" too long for the PV anyway, and glued the PV wheel hub in place with J B Weld. When the JBW had set up, I backed up the glued-in hub with masking tape and poured in more JBW to fill in all the spaces between the adapter housing and the hub. After letting it sit overnight, I drilled and tapped three 5/16 holes through the housing into the hub and screwed in 3/4" long pieces of threaded rod into which I cut a screwdriver slot in the outside end and secured on the inside with a locknut. As I screwed in the pieces of rod so they's be flush with the outside of the adapter, I doused them with Loctight. I had to remove the spade connector the horn button came equipped with and drill a hole in its backing plate to accomodate the spring-loaded PV horn contact. Worked a charm.
Here's what it looks like:
