kickdown cable replacement/friction fit at transmission case

I was breezing through a kickdown cable replacement until I got to the part of having the friction fit "pop" into place.

I have lubed the Oring and have been able to get some pretty decent leverage on it with a pry bar but it will not go into place.

Anybody face a similiar situation and come up with a good solution??
