I have a '94 960 wagon with a failing steering rack due to excess play in the fit of the rack and the bushing(s) in the rack housing on driver's side.
I identified the type of rack on the car as the CAM type both visually and also by the steering type digit (2) on the vehicle service plate under the hood.
I ordered a rebuilt replacement rack from a So. Cal. rebuilder. The rack I received is clearly a ZF rack, but it also appears to have tie rods installed on it that are for the CAM type rack, or if not, they lack the large bushings on the tie rods that require the boots with the large diameter ends on the tie rods.
My questions are as follows:
1. Is the ZF type rack a direct fit into a car originally outfitted with a CAM type of rack?
2. Are these variations in the tie rods & boots acceptable practice? Are the tie rods the same on the two styles of racks?
3. Is this rebuild "wacky"?
I'm a bit uncomfortable with receiving something that is NOT what I ordered, and is NOT the same as what is currently in the car.
