gearbox sound - advice? 120-130 1967

Hi all,

Today on the first drive after 4 days I got a light whirring/scraping sound from underneath the gear-lever, which stayed the whole of the 10 minute drive. Next day it started up with the same sound, but it disappeared when I engaged first and stayed away. Today the sound was there for the first 10 seconds and disappeared without any gear being engaged.

Before I get the old clothes on and hit the underneath, is my description giving an obvious candidate, and does it need urgently looking at? Thanks, as always,
