Further to the original post, the starter motor is now not engaging first time, just whirring when I turn the key, and this seems to be the sound I heard coming from the gear stick area. The car starts OK usually the second turn of the key.

So the starter problem needs solving. Coincidentally the brake booster just happens to quit the same day...
