My 1991 740 Turbo wagon died while out of town on Easter Sunday. It is my 3rd car and I had not driven much all winter, but my daughter decided we should take it out of town for Easter. It ran great on the 200 mile trip up there, but I think I have some water in the tank and ran it a little low on gas and as we started home, it started giving me trouble. While on the freeway, it started missing. It would barely run, but I put some more gas in it and it seemed to be running better, but not good enough to leave town. It had no power, but I could get it up to 50 or 60 mph. The turbo seems to be working fine, if not kicking in sooner than what I would expect.
I tried some gas additives and it seemed a bit better, but still no power. A mechanic looked at it, but he was not too good and had no ideas. He checked compression and said it seemed low on the first 2 cylinders he checked and I think he stopped there. I did not get all the information since it was a friend of a friend who looked at it. He changed the fuel filter, but that was about all he could do.
I am thinking that maybe the timing belt skipped some clogs. That would explain the rough running and low compression if I had valves opening on compression strokes. The timing is also off at about an inch or even a little more to the left of the scale when I hooked up my timing light. I had to trailer it home and plan on digging into it this weekend.
Any ideas on where to start? I love the car and obviously would like to get it back on the road?
I am also thinking of draining the tank, but don't know if I should mess with that at this time.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Mark
