What might break a steel cam gear tooth? 120-130

'66 122 sedan stock B18D M40

A couple of weeks ago a new steel set of timing gears was installed with thoughts of never having to worry about them again. I was wrong.

Half way up a two mile long grade at 65 mph there was a sudden rapid hammering sound coming from the engine compartment. Before there was room to pull over the hammering stopped as suddenly as it began.

Once pulled over and idling, a less frequent and duller knocking sound could be be heard from the front of the engine. It kind of sounded like -- well, like the time the last fiber gear started going south.

The gears were pulled and a broken tooth on the cam gear was evident.



There is no blueing on the gears to indicate oil starvation. Only a single tooth was affected on the cam gear.

Any ideas as to how this could have happened would be most welcome. I am trying to get a replacement set of gears and do not wish to go through the same process again.
