I've just bought a 1997 960 4 door saloon, because I'm still toying with the idea if sticking a 960 front wings and bumpers onto my 940 SE turbo wagon. Anyhow it's a '97 3 litre automatic which refuses to start.
The guy I bought it from swears blind the cam belt didn't break. The coolant is completely clean. I had a quick play with it, and 3 of it's spark plugs came out in 2 pieces or more, one is whole but the porcelain is cracked all the way up. Put some fresh plugs in it and it sounds like it has fuel and spark, but it doesn't start. It pops back through the air filter box, and the air filter box is cracked.
I turned it over by hand and both the notches on the cam pulleys line up with the v's in the plastic cover. I expected number one piston to be at TDC at that point, but it isn't, it's down, 4 is up.
Is there a quick and easy way to check the timing on these things? The poor thing's life is hanging by a thread...........
