Good People,
Well, I did it. Over the holiday weekend, I replaced the condensor, a/c lines, o-rings, expansion valve, dryer, and compressor. Added new (obviously) POE oil and an electric fan, with relay, too boot.
First, I would like to thank all the guys who gave me help, information, and advice.
Second, my thoughts.
1) I wired the fan (& relay) to the compressor. I think an interrupt switch would do nicely here. I do not like the idea of the fan running at highway speeds. Seems unnecessary at speed but is an excellent addition overall. Helps cooling tremendously.
2) Make sure you get the brackets right on the compressor (so that it fits into the bracket), & the bushings in the proper orientation, or you'll have to do extra work. This job is a PIA the old school, hand wrenching, way... but that was how I was rolling over the weekend. Anything you don't have to do over is bonus. It took me about 6-8 hours to do it all, start to finish, the right way. For the most part, it was remove & replace. No real biggie. You'll definitely need a good set of line wrenches and crows feet... all up to 24mm or bigger. The big line on the compressor (suction side) is around 1 1/16... go to a metric conversion site to figure it out in mm if need be
3) I used Freeze-12. Scored a deluxe kit on Flee Bay. Stuff works great. However, I had never re-charged an a/c system before and my charging line was a short and there was adapter drama. Lost some stuff trying to figure out if the cans were empty cause I had to charge the system in the space under the intake. All this after my friend, an HVAC engineer, lent me the sweetest gauges... I could only use them to draw a vacuum. Make sure you have ALL the right adapters from the can tap to the gauge lines and gauge lines to suction side of the compressor!!!
4) The 240 system uses 6.75 oz of oil. I put in 8 oz of POE, 3-4 in the compressor and the rest in the dryer. All by eye ball. A slight over fill but no drama in my mind.
5) My air compressor (5hp 15gal) not enough to power the venturi vacuum pump. Stay away from those POS. If I have any drama aat all with my new set up, I WILL BUY a real, powerful vacuum pump. Rent a good one, score one on Flee Bay then use it and flip it, whatever. I pulled a vacuum for about an hour and 20 minutes before I just said f$%k it. You must pull a vacuum to the best of your ability for 30-40 minutes at 29 hg. Very important step. I could'nt meet all the specs but I went over on time to make up for my shi%$y vacuum pump.
Other than that, I got some cold a$$ air!
My girlie's nipples are sure to get hard in my ride now... and I know the charge could be 6-8 oz more (freeze 12 uses 10% less than the r-12 charge)... I ordered an extra can on Flee Bay so that I can get it just right.
The new compressor cycles good, quite for its style (piston type), system showed no leaks before or after vacuuming, blows cold, and seems really good to go.
Other than the under-charge and a necessary slight adjustment to the body of the compressor to get it perfectly straight in its bracket, I'm STOKED... especially since it was hot in NJ today!!!!!!
Hopefully, I can help others with their a/c problems since I learned so much.
