New tail light lenses and seals- still fill with water 200 1988

I have an '88 240 sedan. About 2 months ago, I replaced the tail light lenses and seals with new ones, due to the fact that the old ones were cracked and filling with water. Well, lo and behold, as I hand washed my car today, I noticed that the new ones also like to fill with water as the car is washed. I realize that this seems to be a common problem, but is there a common solution? I know I installed the lenses correctly, but that sponge type gasket doesn't seem to be the best at keeping out water. Could I drill a small hole in the bottom side of the lenses, or is there actually a way to keep the water out? I want to preserve my brake, reverse, and tail lights if I can. -Brett
