towing another car with a 240 wagon

I have an 89 volvo 240. Id like to tow a car using a tow dolly. The car im going to tow weights about 2500lbs. Its pretty much all down hill and im not in a hurry. The car is a 5speed so i thougth i could drop into 3rd and use that to break. is this possible or am I asking to much from the car?
