While my Marine buddy is over seas in Iraq I have inherited his 84 240 GL to fix and have running upon his return. Before he left he installed a new Engine wiring harness. (Goes from the ECU to the engine). I hope that it was wired correctly. Any way here it goes. The harness was crusty and had so many splices in it that you couldn’t tell what colors the wires were suppose to be. Some one had taken 16 ga red wire and used it for every splice including the grounds.
Symptoms- No Fuel pressure, no pumps running, no spark.
Checked fuse to the main and fuel pump relays 12v both sides of fuse
Main relay will energize.
Fuel pump relay- pins 30 and 86 12v. Jumped pins 87a and 87 fuel pumps work. Fuel to the fuel rail. No ground at pin 85 or what ever pin should have the ground.
Ecu cannon plug pin 18. 12v
Coil- pin 15 12v Ohm checked pin 1-15 1.9 Ohms. Ohm checked pin 1 to center of Coil 9.9 k ohms.
Distributor pick up is Bosh style. While jumping pins B&C No spark to plugs but the fuel regulator clicks. (I guess I should have seen if the pumps were running at this point)
Pin A 12 v.
Parts replaced
New Engine harness??? (Harness from ECU)
Coil
Plugs wires
Ignition switch relay
At this point I am thinking it is an ignition module. Does any one else have any more tests that I should do. Is no fuel and no spark even related to the ignition module? It seems to be???
Note: The pin readings are from memory and could have incorrect pin # on the relays. All steps taken came from the Bentley manual.
Please help and thanks in advance.
