When to replace clutch friction plate? 700 1991

I have the trans. out for repair and the clutch off to replace the rear crank seal. How do you know if the clutch friction plate should be replaced? Are there thickness specs like brake pads that are measured?

Also, can the clutch only be replaced when the transmission is out? If no, I may just leave it since it was not slipping.
