You can only replace the clutch with the transmission out.

I couldn't find a wear limit in my Hayne's. However, I was in the same position as you, and after putting the old clutch and everything back in I found it impossible to adjust the clutch to remove slippage.

There must be thickness specs somewhere. Maybe find out the thickness of a new one and compare.
