paint my brick? need some opinions!

hello bricksters

i have a slight decision to make: my 89 740 GL is in need of a new paint job.
i cant afford to have it painted, so i'm looking into doing it myself....good idea? what am i really getting into? i'd like to just buy some kit that has everything i need to do the job (material wise, i have the compressor, gun, etc.) i assume i need (1)primer, (2) paint (what kind is best?) (3) clear coat...right? i want to spend as little money as possible but i still want it to look nice! how should i go about doing this?
any thoughts/suggestions are greatly appreciated!
