Silly question??? 120-130

I want to clean the engine/compartment off in the 66' sedan I am
getting road worthy.

1. What is the best stuff to use?

2. I am ASSuming I should cover up the air cleanners
so no water gets in BUT is there anything else I should
cover up?

3. Can I do this at the house?
A friend suggested I take it to the car wash and do this
but I have no tags on the car so I really don't want to risk
driving it there. I also don't want to kill a lot of grass or
send toxic sludge into the ground!

I haven't done this stuff for a loooooong time and when I
bought my wagon the engine came nice and clean....lol.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

cheers,

karl
