Howdy, all.
I have a 1991 940 Turbo wagon (B230FT). This problem has grown increasingly worse over the past 2 years (from once every few months, up to every time I drive). It is especially bad in the summer.
I'm having a hot start problem. After driving for anything more than a small errand and stopping, the car will not turn over. No cranking. Battery charge is normal. If I turn the ignition to on, all electrical components (a/c, headlights, etc) perform fine. It just won't turn over. Like its dead in the water, but with full power. This also happens if I park on the curb in front of my house (Texas summer) with no shade, instead of in the carport. It doesn't matter if it's been driven or not. The hot ambient temp alone causes the no start.
If I jump start the battery with another vehicle, it starts perfectly and runs perfectly. Or if I let the car sit for half an hour to an hour, the engine starts fine (On a side note: As of lately, it sometimes stalls two or three times after start. After a few starts and stalls, it goes "dead" again, with no engine turn. These stalls only happen after a no-start incident and I've restarted using either a jump or waited an hour for it to cool down. Does that make sense?).
I've tested the battery when running, and the current is normal and the alternator is charging properly.
After checking the FAQ, I started first with replacing the ignition coil. The problem continued after my first test run with the new coil. My next guess would be the starter?
Any and all thoughts and comments and recommendations are greatly, greatly appreciated.
I have access to a DMM, but am still a bit of a newbie in using it (but could figure out anything if I had to).
Thanks a bunch for your time,
Tommy
