A/C problems after timing belt replacement 700 1990

Just had some work done on my 1990 740 GLE 16-valve wagon, 225K. Mechanic replaced timing belt, engine belts, some suspension work. He's well-regarded locally for his full-time Volvo work.

Drove it home - works fine, except that the A/C now doesn't work.

I don't think I hear the compressor switching on and off when I use the dash control, and the a/c fan doesn't run. When I short the wires together from the a/c fan control relay, the a/c fan runs, but the system still doesn't cool and I dont' hear the a/c cycle on or off if I use the dash control. Al fuses seem okay.

Could there be a loose wire (ground wire?) somewhere?

A/C worked fine when I brought it in. I did find the a/c compressor cycled on and off when first started, but I think that may be normal.

Of course, I'll drive by and let the mechanic look at it tomorrow - he's a good man and will stand by his work - but if anyone has any ideas, I'd like to hear them. The combined experience/wisdom of this list has been very, very helpful in the past.

Thanks,
Brian
