No Spark - Bad Coil? 444-544 1953

On the weekend I attempted to do a tuneup on my B4B - new plugs, points, condensor, adjust values. The engine was running beforehand, but I seemed to sense it was time to replace a few items. Everything went smooth as it has for the last 37 years, except the engine would not fire. It was getting dark and started to rain, so I postponed any further checking until today. Here's the symptoms:

- no apparent spark
- crack on top of coil, a little oil seeping out
- small amount of impedence across the points when open (short in coil?)
- re-installed original condensor (maybe the new condensor was not 100% match?)
- checked internal low voltage wire at connector for points and condensor
(condensor is inside Autolite destributor)
- removed plugs and dried off fuel and heated before returning to engine

Before I replace the coil and ignition switch with a hopefully good spare, is there anything else to check? The crack in the coil, near the high voltage wire is a mystery. Did this just happen with the wrong condensor, or was it about to fail regardless of what I did (wrong)?

Any advice, similar experiences or suggestions would be appreciated. Except for the 6 volt system and the Autolite distributor, it should be relatively identical to any 12 volt ignition point system.
