Resistance (not impedence) across the points when they are open? That would indicate a short between the distributor lead and engine ground, simulating points that are closed. Either the insulation is breached and touching metal, terminal / hardware mounted wrong at the points, or points defective in manufacture.
Disconnect low-tension wire to distributor at coil and connect ohmmeter to loose wire and to engine ground. Open points should equal infinite resistance. No? put paper or business card into contacts of points to ensure they are really open. Resistance still there? disconnect the wires from the points and hold them from touching bare metal (leave meter connected). If the reading is now good, the resistance was either from the condenser, the point set, or else the terminals are touching ground when attached to the holding screw. If it's still showing resistance, then it's the wire that you have now isolated from everything else except the meter at one end and your fngertips at the other.
Focus on the items you touched. It is not likely that the coil failed at the same time you opened the hood.
