Death Valley Mid-Winter Warm-Up Meet? 444-544

Our weather out here in the California High Desert is pretty good all year around, but December through February are the best months. During that time our 'winter' weather is pretty much like summer in other parts of the country.

A few years ago a travel trailer club I belong to held a midwinter meet at one of the campgrounds over in Death Valley. There aren't any motels right at the park, but there are a few over in Beatty, Nevada, and here in my home town of Ridgecrest, California. We're about an hour's drive from Death Valley.

We had a great time camping out with our fellow club members, and I'd recommend doing that over staying in a motel.

I'd like to see if there's enough interest in having a meet in the middle of winter to warrent setting up a reserved block in a campground, or checking the winter costs of the motels nearby.

As you can see by visiting the Death Valley website, there are a lot of neat things to do in the park. And, of course, you get to drive a lot going from attraction to attraction!

An attractive alternative would be to set up a block of rooms in Las Vegas and spend three or four (week)days over there. If you don't gamble, you're in for a treat, as Las Vegas has more fun things to do than anywhere else I've been.

As regular visitors (we average one or two trips each month) Tarona and I know a lot of the better places to go to eat, see shows, etc. If this is what everyone wants to do, I'd set up rooms in the Downtown (Fremont Street) area or out on Boulder Highway.

Just testing the waters!

Let us know what you think...

Steve & Tarona Stanfield
