The weekend weather in Houston finally cooperated (no rain) and I finally replaced the the motor mounts. All the advice from the Brickboard, and especially from Bob (B.C.), was extremely helpful and everything went well. A few comments from my experience.
I started with the front up on ramps. Since both front mounts were sheared, there was nothing restraining the engine from shifting rearward when lifted except the trans mount, and it has a good bit of play. In the engine removal and replacement section of the Bentley manual it mentions raising the rear of the car so that the car is level when installing the engine and fastening the mounts. I raised the rear and it made a tremendous difference in keeping the engine close to the correct position.
No special tools are needed, but as many people said a ratchet box-end wrench helps for the bolt on the right mount behind the alternator. Really hard to get anything on it and get a good turn.
I used two 2X6X6' sandwiched together and placed on top of the fenders to lift the engine using an eye bolt. No damage to the fenders. Chassis is pretty stiff and the 2X6 spreads the load well enough.
You can probably get the mounts cheaper elsewhere, but I got mine at the dealer. This job is not really hard for an accomplished do-it-yourselfer, but it does take a good bit of time and effort and you don't want to have to do it again anytime soon.
Thanks again for all the suggestions.
