Removal of intake to do wiring harness? 200 1984

It was suggested to me that I should remove the intake manifold to replace my wiring harness. Is this really necessary? It looks to me like all that's underneath the manifold is a couple of sensors - should be easy enough to unplug those and reconnect the new wires by feel, right?

Also, the harness came with a big rubber plug on it - looks like what I'd put on a harness where it went through a firewall. Does the main engine harness actually pass through the firewall somewhere? I thought there were fender subharnesses that did that.
