Ambient Temperature Gauge wiring 200 1986

At present I am in the process of fitting an ambient temperature gauge to my 86 240GL. I have mounted the temperature sensor under the front bumper and run a wire back through the firewall to the dash-mounted gauge. I have taken the power to the gauge light and both earths from the small clock (mounted directly above). My dilemma is where best to take the main power feed from? Should I run a wire from the fuse box to the gauge - which terminal? Or, should I take power from another source? I obviously can't take power from the clock or the gauge will be on all the time. Hoping someone out there might be able to give me a few clues. Thanks in anticipation - us Volvo lovers are thin on the ground in South Australia!
