Overdrive 'Cutout' Kicking In 200 1987

Not sure if "overdrive cutout" is the right term, but my '87 240 with automatic is experiencing a condition where the upward pointing orange arrow light comes on, and the tranny downshifts out of top gear--apparently the car thinks the button on the shifter knob has been pushed. Tapping on the button solves the problem.

Previous to this, the orange arrow would occasionally come on, but the car didn't actually shift gears.

Any ideas on what is happening to cause this? I want to fix it before it downshifts as I'm heading down the interstate.
