Airbox Modification 700 1986

Last weekend I removed the hot air intake hose that leads into the airbox. While I was there I tested the thermostat and flap inside the air box. It tested okay. Since I no longer need the thermostat should I remove it? I plan to take off the whole thermostat assembly and run a pipe from the airbox directly to the grill. I have heard of people doing this and claiming better fuel consumption. I can't think why, unless the increase in air is leaning out the AFR? Does anyone know the purpose of the airbox other than to house the filter? Does it reduce induction noise?

My plan is to improve fuel consumption. Don't seem to be able to do better than 30mpg on a good day though.

Cheers
