FAQ Help 200 1993

Hello all!
Just read the FAQ section regarding a slow battery discharge. One bit of advice is to "remove the positive battery terminal, and with an ammeter, measure to see if there is any current flowing from the battery to the cable."
How do I do that? It doesn't make sense. Does this current flow through the air from the battery to the cable while unattached?
I have the positive cable removed and the ammeter in hand. Do I keep the ammeter grounded and probe around the unattached cable with the positive lead of the ammeter? How close to the battery should the positive cable be resting?

I finished replacing the heater blower motor this weekend, and now I have a dead (new) battery. An electrical connection must be loose somewhere under the dash and is draining the battery.

Thanks for your help.
