Two weeks ago, I replaced the leaking OEM rack & pinion on my 93 245 (193K miles). After installing, it had a little leak at the hose to rack junction (copper washers?) I had to reuse the originals as the rebuilt one did not have new ones. I have run the reservoir almost dry today so,this being an emergency,I added Dexstron ATF fluid in the reservoir. Worked OK, but the steering wheel still has the shakes.
I have bought some new copper washers, but only one fits tightly (14mm)onto the smaller of the 2 hollow bolts. The other one fits slightly loose but may make a tight connection upon torquing up.
I have heard that if one takes the OEM copper washers, rubs them on some 180 grit and then heats them up with a torch, they work like new. Is this true?
I'll do it to the ones that are leaking now and reinstall.
Crazy or not???
thanks for any help.
BTW, Rob B., I sure envy you being up in Yankee land near to all those great PNP's in Mass. I have to drive to Houston or SA (350 miles one way)
