740 speedometer malfunction 700

Finally got the car driving reasonably. Next problem on the list is the malfunctioning speedometer. The speedometer works intermittendly. I do have good signal from the rear axle sensor. Pushing the reset button or banging the dash works sometimes to restore function. I could care less for the speedometer if my cruisecontrol didn,t sop working too.
Is there a way to feed the voltage input straight to the cruise control? Or does it need a working speedo?
Take the speedo apart and check the gears?
All info welcome. I read the FAQ.
