Overdrive arrow light on but 4th gear engages 700 1990

Hi Guys
Just today, the arrow warning light on the dashboard came on. Unless I pressed the o/d switch by mistake, I didn't press it. Now the arrow warning light stays on even if I press the o/d switch.
However, I am 100% sure that overdrive is still engaging and it is still going into 4th gear just like it always has despite the arrow light staying on.
(Apart from counting the number or shifts up to 4th to confirm o/d is working, it still reads about 2600rpm at about 70mph just like before.)
Any ideas why this is happening? Given the o/d is coming on, I 'd rather not have the light.
