Funny electrical problem 200

OK, here's a new one for me. Driving down the street tonight in my 1984 240 sedan and turn on the left turn signal. The car immediately dies and the battery light comes on. The flasher relay seemed really loud too. Anyway, the car eventually started back but the battery warning light is faintly glowing. Before going home, I stop by the local auto parts store and have them run a check on the battery just to be safe and it checked out OK. The battery light goes completely out again and all seems fine. When I got home I turned on the turn signal again and once again the car died except this time there are no warning lights coming on at all and the car will not start. The starter spins and spins but the car will not fire. The headlights work too. I let the car sit for a few minutes and then it appeared to be OK, started and ran just fine. Of course I'm looking for a place to start tracing wires and wonder if the turn signal relay or flasher failure could cause such big problems? Also, after the first failure on the street the OD switch on the manual shifter would not engage the OD.

Just looking for some advice before I start looking tomorrow. I don't have a Bentley manual yet so any help would be appreciated.

Matt
